During a 2015 interview on Marc Maron’s podcast, the host asked Bateman about the failed sequel. “The second one was garbage, as far as box office goes,” he admitted. “Who knows whether it was on the merits or when they released it, but it did not do any money.” The sequel earned $54.4 million at the U.S. box office, a fraction of the $117.5 million the first Horrible Bosses brought in. The sequel was released on Thanksgiving weekend in 2014, when family fare tends to dominate the box office. “I guess there is a reason R-rated comedies don’t get released during a big family vacation,” Bateman told Maron. However, he also acknowledged the possibility that people were simply not up for another go-around with the friends of the first film (played by Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, and Charlie Day), who sought to kill their bosses. “It’s just a question of, did anybody really care [about a sequel]?” said Bateman. “I mean, a lot of people saw the first one, but there are plenty of films that made a lot of money that no one is interested in seeing another one.” Maron pointed out that an offer to do a follow-up to a successful movie is hard to turn down. “When you get an offer like that, you know what the score is,” he said. “Oh yeah, that’s a paycheck for everyone,” Bateman responded. “It’s the audience’s fault. You know, don’t go out and buy a bunch of tickets for the first one unless you want the second one because we don’t have any discipline in this town,” he joked. “It’s a path of least resistance.” Although Bateman knew doing a sequel would be financially beneficial, he said that he, Sudeikis, and Day were all pretty cynical about the offer at first. According to Bateman, they did a lot of work to make sure the second film made sense, but ultimately it was somewhat of a futile effort. While the film flopped, the actor said he enjoyed the experience of making it. “We worked really hard on the story and had a really good time shooting it,” he said. Horrible Bosses 2 is hardly the only sequel that failed to meet the success of the original.
