On Aug. 23, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Loki Fish Company had recalled its 4-oz. packages of Keta Salmon Lox. The affected lox, which was packaged in plastic on a coated board, can be identified by UPC number 92103 00111 and the words “Wild Keta Lox, Loki Fish Co., Seattle, WA” printed on the packaging. The recall was initiated after an FDA inspection at a packing facility the company uses revealed that the fish may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. “Loki has ceased production, sales, and distribution of keta lox immediately and Loki will continue the investigation as to what caused the problem,” the company explains. While Loki had received no complaints of illness or injury related to consumption of the affected lox at the time the recall was announced, listeria is associated with serious health risks. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeria can cause fever and diarrhea when the infection is contained in the gut, and may also result in symptoms like headache, muscle aches, confusion, loss of balance, neck stiffness, and convulsions in otherwise healthy people. In addition to these symptoms, the condition can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, and pre-term delivery in pregnant people and may cause a potentially fatal infection in newborns. In older adults and immunocompromised individuals, listeriosis—the infection caused by listeria—is more likely to cause serious health issues or prove fatal. The CDC reports that approximately 16 percent of the 1,600 people diagnosed with listeriosis each year will die from the condition.
